Colorado Vignette - Molly Brown House Museum

Saved from demolition in 1970, the Molly Brown House Museum stands as a symbol of Denver's gloried past. As one of only a handful of historic sites dedicated to a woman's story, the 116-year-old house also tells an important American story of a woman who rose to great wealth but remained committed to others. Margaret Tobin Brown tirelessly advocated for children's rights, women's suffrage and labor reform, helping to usher in a new age.

Only four blocks from the state capitol, the 14-room home of this Titanic survivor encapsulates the elegant spirit of its famed resident and provides clues about her storied exploits. The exotic foreign collectibles reveal Mrs. Brown's passion for travel, her extensive library makes plain her desire for education and the "modern" appliances announce her forward-thinking nature. The entire home has been restored to its early 20th century grandeur, creating a visceral experience of a bygone era for visitors.

Summer Exhibit: Daughter of Adventure, The World Travels of Margaret Tobin Brown. For the fourth year, the Molly Brown House Museum will present a special blockbuster summer exhibit. On May 24th, Daughter of Adventure will open to the public in order to highlight Margaret Brown's passion for globe-trotting. Refusing to be "mildewed at forty," Margaret Brown spent time in European capitols, learned tea traditions in Japan, took yodeling lessons in Switzerland, rode a camel in Egypt and published travel articles on India's caste system. Even after encountering a typhoon in the Indian Ocean and surviving the Titanic tragedy, Margaret's passion persisted.

The exhibit will include rarely displayed photographs and collectibles from Margaret's travels. In addition to the fascinating objects on display, the exhibit will extend into the newly restored back porch and parlor where visitors can read more about women's travels in the Victorian era. On June 11th, the Museum will host a special Japanese Tea to honor Margaret's interest in the far-east.

Trained docents and volunteers offer tours seven days a week each summer and Tuesday through Sunday between September and May. Tours run every half hour with the first at 10:00 am and the last at 3:30 pm. On Sundays, the Museum opens at 12:00 pm. The Museum also hosts special programs and teas, including teddy-bear teas and an annual literary event, Victorian Horrors. Outreach programs for schools and groups are also available.

The Molly Brown House Museum is located at 1340 Pennsylvania in Denver. Visit www.molly-brown.org or call (303) 832-4092 for more information about Margaret Brown or the Museum. The Molly Brown House Museum is owned and operated by Historic Denver, Inc.
