Colorado Vignette - Heritage
Square
In 1952, noted Denver business man Walter
Francis Cobb and sculptor John Calvin Sutton dreamed up the idea of
a new, fun family resort for the Denver area, called Magic Mountain.
The concept was another Disneyland. Perched on the side of a hill above
Golden the recreation of an 1880's Victorian/Western town was built
in 1958. A full scale narrow gauge train was constructed to circle Magic
Mountain, using historic Denver & Rio Grande Locomotive 420. An
ornate Victorian designed depot was built near the park's entrance,
far fancier than any depot Golden had ever seen. Many of the plans never
came to fruition. A Magic Mountain Ski Area, however, was built complete
with artificial snow and a rope tow. The ski area was successful, unfortunately
Magic Mountain was not and the ski area came down in 1960. As great
as all the plans were, financial footing was never found and it operated
only 2 years. Magic Mountain was auctioned off in late 1960. It would
take 11 years before new owners could open it again. In 1971 Magic Mountain
reopened as Heritage Square. Later in the decade the hill where the
ski tow once stood, an alpine slide was built. It was the second alpine
slide build outside a ski resort in the U.S.

Unique
shops, restaurants, and amusement rides plus the rail road, bungee tower
and alpine slide are still highlights today.
Wings of Eagles offers a unique collage of Native American Art Work
and collectibles. The Christmas Tree has been a Heritage Square stand
by from the beginning. The abundance of speciality items, unique gifts
and collectables will intrigue everyone. Garden Spot is packed with
colorful and imaginative gifts for the garden and home. Second Hand
Rose is an elite consignment shop for ladies and children. Cedar Chest
is a bright, classy shop full of unique kitchen tools and home decor.
A most memorable way to record your visit to Heritage Square is to visit
Professor Goodbellows. You will see yourself in period costumes, in
Old Time Photos (ready in 5 minutes) to remember your day for years
to come. Then you may finish your day with dinner and a show at The
Heritage Square Music Hall. The dinner theater features melodramas and
musical reviews as well as a children's theater.
To reach Heritage Square, take I 70 West to exit 259, turn right (north)
and go 1 mile. You can't miss
it. This is a great way to fill a day with friends and family. We hope
you enjoy your visit.
