January - April In May of 2001, Dorothy and William Sr. Harmsen, founders of the Jolly Rancher Candy Company and long-time residents of Colorado, donated their prestigious Harmsen Western Art Collection to the Denver Art Museum. A Colorado Legacy celebrates this generous gift by showcasing more than 25 of the most significant paintings and American Indian art objects from the collection. The Harmsens' immense collection of Western and American Indian art was amassed over a 40 year period of collecting and includes work by artists including George Catlin, Charles Bird King, N.C. January - May 28 The Denver Art Museum presents China Meets the American Southwest, Pottery Designs and Traditions. Pottery from opposite sides of the globe contrasts Native American pieces from the museums collection with ancient Chinese examples on loan from the Sze Hong Collection. 720-865-5000

January 11 Chef's Cup Race & Benefit Dinner Dance. Fraser Valley chefs go head-to-head on the slopes of Winter Park during the day but the action really heats up that evening in the kitchen when they showcase their culinary talents for a dinner to benefit the Winter Park Competition Center. Sample the specialties of local chefs in one setting, live entertainment and dancing through the night make this one of the winter season's most anticipated events. For tickets 970-726-159

January 12 - 13 Kids Totally Insane Winter Blast in Winter Park. This wild winter adventure includes music, giveaways, parties and games. Don't miss the abominable snowman obstacle course, snow ball downhill race and the totally insane snow dance contest. All the events are free (lift ticket recommended). Call 800-757-7669.

January 26 - 27 Join us for all the fun of the annual Winter Carnival, Snow Cross Races, & Snow Sculpture Contest. The races will be held at Winding River Resort. Call the Grand Lake Chamber of Commerce 970-627-3402.

January 29 - February 3 International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge. Sixteen teams from around the world compete in this eye-pleasing event, creating mammoth works of art from 12-feet-tall, 20-ton blocks of snow. Well-known artists act as judges for the event, which has brought sculptors from as far away as Morocco, Belize, Japan, Canada, Scandinavia, Russia, China and Wales. 970-453-6018

January 31 - Feb. 12 - Ullr Fest - A two-week long schedule of events devoted to something Breckenridge does well - having fun! Homage is paid to the mythical Norse god of winter. January - February 24 Guided Snowshoe/Cross Country Treks - Rocky Mountain National Park. Beginner level Snow tours lasting 2+ hours, leave from the Kawuneeche Visitor Center at 1:00 pm on Saturdays (ski trip) and 9:30 am on Sundays (snowshoe trip). January 5, 6, 19, 20 Copper Mountain Snowboard Series. The longest-running amateur snowboard series in North America, USASA sanctioned series includes Halfpipe on Sat. and Slopestyle on Sun. January 5 - 6, 20 Bud Light Freeride Series in Winter Park. Skier/Boarder Cross when four competitors go head-to-head down an obstacle course covered with berms, rollers, table tops, spines, and GS gates. The 1st and 2nd finishers move on to the next heat and the top three finishers in each age category receive awards. Separate divisions for snowboarders and skiers. Cost for the entire series is $120 or $25 for each event. Participants under 14 receive $10 off single event prices. Call the Competition Center 970-726-1590.

January 9 - 13 Chevy Truck U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix, Breckenridge the second stop of this USSA sanctioned snowboard series. The Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious and richest snowboard circuits in the world. Expect incredible performances and after-hours entertainment to match the magnitude of this world-class competition.
